Musee Archeologique De Grenoble - Review

Highly Grenoble centric, the artefacts of this museum provide a deep insight into Grenoble’s history – about 2000 years of it, but especially around the Middle Ages. Most of the items you’ll see here were excavated from this very site. More than 1500 tombs have also been excavated, giving great insight into burial science and evolving religious priorities. The museum is actually set in an old Church, St. Lawrence’s. It’s built on the site of an earlier Carolingian church and a later Benedictine church, and finally a Romanesque church. What’s really beautiful though is the choir with its magnificent altar, stained glass windows, frescoes and mosaics.

Musee Archeologique De Grenoble, Grenoble Reviews

  • I liked they gave us audio guide for free so you can walk by your own and listen stories behind each exposition point. You actually get very close to the objects of exposition. You can reach these ruins by hand. Not just looking from the height of 2 meters through a glass. Never got so close before. Well designed tour. Enjoyed a lot to learn history of this place .

  • Wonderful surprise. Free entry and free audio guides, but the experience is so well curated, so atmospheric and so informative that it feels a little embarrassing to not be charged. There are also interactive panels in English, Spanish and Italian to help you discover more about the art work, the archaeological digs and the history of the church. Can't recommend it enough.

  • Great place for a one-hour visit. Besides being free as in free beer, you can also get an audio file in different languages. The visit tells you a lot about the city. Beware that you will see skeletons and open graves from centuries ago (avoid if you have any related phobia).

  • This place is way underrated! Awesome excavated mausoleum, and at least when we were there, no lines and almost no other visitors.

  • Fascinating insight into Grenoble's Christian roots from 520 AD. A must do when you are in town.
