Highly Grenoble centric, the artefacts of this museum provide a deep insight into Grenoble’s history – about 2000 years of it, but especially around the Middle Ages. Most of the items you’ll see here were excavated from this very site. More than 1500 tombs have also been excavated, giving great insight into burial science and evolving religious priorities. The museum is actually set in an old Church, St. Lawrence’s. It’s built on the site of an earlier Carolingian church and a later Benedictine church, and finally a Romanesque church. What’s really beautiful though is the choir with its magnificent altar, stained glass windows, frescoes and mosaics.
