The museum finds a very natural home in Grenoble’s own botanical garden. It’s a Romantic affair, divided by a charming stream, a perfect setting of one of the regions oldest museum. The institute was founded in 1851 to record and witness the beauty for natural life, but in recent years has taken on another important role – to showcase human impact on the natural world. The 1.5 million specimen collection is broken down into:

Earth Sciences

  • Mineralogy
  • Palaeontology
  • Petrography

Life Sciences

  • Botanical
  • Mycology
  • Zoology

  • Ethnology
  • Archeology

Despite this rather straightforward structure, it’s a rather moving place. There’s a tangible sorrow when the museum tells of the species that have become extinct due to human activity, and a tender hope when it speaks of the endangered. It engages one’s love for the planet on every level, and you WILL be affected as you leave.
