The Basistha Temple flanked by cave formations and natural vegetation of Garbhanga Reserve Forest is a quaint Hindu pilgrimage site with an ashram. On the banks of the narrow mountain stream of the Meghalaya Hill, the temple on top of the Sandhyachal Hill was constructed by Rajeshwar Singha, the Ahom King. The legend goes that the ashram of the temple dates back to the Vedic Age when the sage Basistha had founded this hermitage to dedicate Lord Shiva. The Basistha Temple is built of red bricks and sandstone and features some stunning stone and terracotta sculptures.
