Sea Turtle Hatchery, Habaraduwa Reviews
Good location that seem to be a "decent" and somehow "ethical" hatchery. It's hard to tell with those places. The turtles are kept in relatively small tanks but they are building bigger ones. The baby are in a separate one waiting to be released. They also foster a hanticap turtle which it's sad but cute to see. You can put baby turtles at see for 1500Rs and they give you about 5-8 babies per person. Good to go in group since you can see more babies go to the sea all together. The activity last about 1 hour but there is no one to answer your question. Really cute, and joyful activity. Would work perfect for families.
Sad conditions they keep the animals in. I doubt those animals are well taken care of. The water tanks are small and the water doesn’t seem to be clean in some of the tanks. But to their credit, they have 3 turtles with damages in their care The guides claim that they rescue baby turtles but who knows if it’s true. It was nice to see the small ones. But we hardly spend more than 15 min there.
If you have the time stick around and ask questions. They do need to move the groups along, but you can hang out. Go to the fantastic beach. Ask more questions. They know their business. The sea water is changed weekly, they pump it from the ocean. The eggs need to be protected from the human predators. It's good to help the sick and weak. I personally think turtles are better served by egg protection than by helping a small number of invalids.
We had a very lovely visit to this quaint Turtle Hatchery. The staff were very knowledgeable and informative about the turtles, and seemed to really care and have a passion for their well-being. A very worthy cause to support and an interesting excursion for an hour or two.
1500 roupee to release baby turtles in the ocean at sunset. But it's really lovely. There is other big turtles that you can see
