The current building of Old British Consulate of Hakodate was built in 1913 on the grounds of the the original building that suffered severe damage from the fire of 1907. This place served as the consulate till 1934 and after heavy restoration, its was opened to the public in 1992 as the “Opening-Port Memorial Hall”.

The building consists of the Consulate’s main office that remembers Richard Eusden, an exhibition room that showcases the history of Hakodate’s port including the opening of Japan’s first international trading port.  The Port Opening Memorial Exhibition includes a model of Hakodate during the opening of the international port complete with ships that would sail to its harbour.

The historic photographs, pottery pieces and the stories of the place make this mansion rather special. All through the Meiji period, this place was a common stop for the Crown Prince and even today, the opulent furnishings, plush interiors and impeccable design- all recreate the time of royalty.

Before you leave don’t forget to stop by at the in-house shop where you can buy beautiful British accessories, teas, sweets and other fabulous treats (the décor of the place is just as popular!). End the visit at the Tea room where you can sip on a cup of tea while admiring the radiant view of the rose garden!
