After a long era of Isolation, Japan opened to the world with international trade in the 19th century. The Hakodate Bugyosho played an important role during this time by serving as a government building. The office overlooked all the diplomatic policies and became an administrative centre of the Ezo region.

In 2010, the building was restored keeping its original design and ambience intact and today, a part of the building is opened to the public and is converted to a cultural museum. The classic Japanese architecture, the stunning wooden framework, classic Asian roofing and beautiful corridors, relive the stories of 19th century Hakodate. The rooms and cabins are separated by panels and even though quiet minimal, they complete the experience and the wood work is simply stunning! The place has a small museum that gives you a brief of the Boshin war and if you love history, a visit here is an absolute must. During winters, the building is nothing short of a scene from a Japanese fairy tale!
