The Hakodate Museum of Northern Peoples displays parts of exhibits that were once housed in the Hakodate City Museum. The city thought it was apt to dedicate a different museum for the cultural history of the Northern People in Japan and in 1993, this building was opened to the public to relive the lives, culture, rituals and the sheer essence of the indigenous Ainu tribe and the Orok people.

Today, in spite of the Ainu and Orak population being a minority, they did form an intrinsic part of Russia and Japan at one time. The museum has a collection belonging to the Orok people and about 750 rare items used in the daily life of the Ainu tribe.

Highlights of the museum include:

  • Old Collection from Hakodate Museum including artefacts that date from the 12th to the 19th century!
  • The Kodama collection (named on the Professor Kodama who studied the Ainu family ancestry) that includes historic clothes, purses and wooden artefacts.
  • Beautiful rare jewelry pieces , traditional gaiters, pottery pieces, tools of hunting and heavy-duty jackets made from leather.
  • Paintings that depict various rituals (like the Bear ceremony) and historic scrolls.
