In 1869 during the Battle of Hakodate, Hijikata lead Ezo troops to fight against the government. It is said that the battle lasted for 16 hours and 35,000 bullets were fired throughout the time (witnesses say, owing to the innumerable bullet shot, the faces of troops were blackened from the gunpowder!).
On May 1839, the government attacked these fighters and even though the troops were threatened by Hijikata to not retreat, the valiant leader was shot in the back and fell to his death. At the sight of his death, today you can find the Hekketsuhi Monument (Hekketsu means green blood). Did you know, legends say that if a loyal man dies, his blood turns into Jasper! This cenotaph pays tribute to one of the bravest leaders in Japan.
