Located around 32 kilometres to the east of Hakodate city, the Hiuramisaki Columnar Joint along the coast of Hiuracho are nothing short of breath-taking. Columnar joints are formed by the subsequent cooling of hot lava and are commonly found where the magma comes in direct contact with a water body. Upon cooling, the magma develops cracks that meet at various angles to form perfectly hexagonal or pentagonal joints. The surreal view of these joints at Hiuracho, magnify the extent of just how gorgeous these joints can look! The view of the ocean from here doubles the charm.Walk around the massive outcrops and don’t forget to take some fabulous photos when you visit.
