How to Reach Hakodate


  • By Air : The city of Hakodate is served by the Hakodate Airport and is operated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. This airport connects Hakodate with all the major countries across Japan as well as a few a nearby international destinations. A few of the airlines operating in and out of this airport are Air Do, All Nippon Airways, China Airlines, and Japan Airlines. The airport is located at 7 kilometres from the city centre and has shuttle bus services running between city and the airport.  
  • By Train : Japan Rail operates direct trains between the cities of Hakodate and Tokyo. The one-way journey lasts about 4 hours from Tokyo to Hakodate although train is not the most favoured mode of transportation.
  • By Boat : Being a harbour city, boats and ferries are a popular mode of transportation to reach Hakodate.  Ferry services are operated by Seikan Ferry and Tsugaru Kaikyo Ferry. There are shuttle buses available from city centre to ferry terminal.



The best way to move around the city is by trams. An extensive two-line streetcar network connects many parts of the city to its centre and the railway station. Day and season passes can be purchased for these trams at any one of the dedicated ticket counters. You can even fetch a taxi for a quick ride between two points.
