The Motomachi Catholic church was built in 1924 on the grounds of a former church that was built in 1877 and marked a revival of Christian faith in Japan after years of suppression. The distinct belfry of the church is quiet a sight on its own but step into the church and you have entered a whole new world.

The Gothic architecture of the church magnifies its charm and along with beautiful main altarpiece (gifted by the Pope of Rom), the church has become one of the finest in the city. Incidentally, the church is also one of the oldest- the original burnt down in 1907 along with other buildings in the city.

Come here to see the art that surrounds the place- the stained glass art, gold embellishments on the altar, the gorgeous secondary altar and the beautiful nave- all make the church one of the most memorable buildings in Hakodate.
