Tadataka Ino was born in 1745 and was a renowned Japanese surveyor and cartographer. Ino is most famous for completing the first map of Japan. He started learning astronomy after age 50 when he retired and for 17 years after he learned the art, he carried out intensive field studies across Japan to calibrate the distance and map them. Today, Ino is credited for making some of the most accurate maps of his time by using modern technique and equipment.
The Tadataka Ino Memorial Monument is dedicated to his life of work that further helped Japan manage its routes and boost international trade.
