Japan's first outdoor art museum against the backdrop of the picturesque Hakone mountains, is indeed a treat for your eyes. Spread over 70,000 square metres of lushness, this museum believes in promotion of sculpture as an environmental art. There are 120 permanent art installations from modern and contemporary sculptors and artists from all over the world, that are displayed here. The sculptures are not guarded by any fence, thus giving the visitors an opportunity to get a feel of the artist's message from close. There are also five indoor exhibitions, one of which is the popular Picasso's Pavillion, displaying 300 of the maestro's work. Nature provides a unique background to these pieces of art, as different seasons provide different framework for the sculptures.

Hakone Open Air Museum, Hakone Reviews - Write a Review

  • Beautiful, Innovative and Memorable. There's nothing better than being able to view art and sculptures in what seems like a natural environment. There was so much to see and experience while visiting the museum. It was unique and had a tremendous amount to offer. Even the playground or installations for children were unique and innovative. The Hakone Open-Air Museum was something I am very glad I didn't miss while in Hakone.

  • Really breathtaking museum. Worth setting aside 1.5-2 hours to be able to drift through without any time pressure. Several interactive installations that can be played in if you're a child. Hot spring foot bath to rest the legs. Unlike any other museum I've been to. A wonderful combination of location and collection.

  • Absolute fantasy to visit this place in Autumn. Brilliant photo spots and interesting sculptures. The Picasso pavilion somewhat dulls the Picasso image but thats fine. Some very interesting art work and ideas. The pond and the suspension bridge are quite a thing to see. I’ve never seen so many huge fishes in one single pond.

  • Stunningly beautiful place. Great place for the whole family to come where kids can run around and the adults can enjoy the art. If you want to take advantage of foot bath, bring a small towel. The museum cafe is a great place to rest with a nice cup of tea, sweets and even gelato.

  • Very nice and rather huge place, the exhibits are not crowd together. You would want to set the visit to 2-3 hrs. The souvenir shop has many interesting items too. Tickets are discounted if you have the hakone free pass.
