Hakone Open Air Museum - Review
Japan's first outdoor art museum against the backdrop of the picturesque Hakone mountains, is indeed a treat for your eyes. Spread over 70,000 square metres of lushness, this museum believes in promotion of sculpture as an environmental art. There are 120 permanent art installations from modern and contemporary sculptors and artists from all over the world, that are displayed here. The sculptures are not guarded by any fence, thus giving the visitors an opportunity to get a feel of the artist's message from close. There are also five indoor exhibitions, one of which is the popular Picasso's Pavillion, displaying 300 of the maestro's work. Nature provides a unique background to these pieces of art, as different seasons provide different framework for the sculptures.

Hakone Open Air Museum, Hakone Reviews
Good Place if you are a lover of art. I am a heathen who is not well versed in the many aspects of art, but still managed to have a good time. I discovered that by the end of the trip I could pretty much determine which part of the word the various sculptures we're from. The Italian and Japanese statues were beautiful, detailed, and in one case terrifying. The French (with the exception of the entrance pieces) and British ones were definitely not to my taste. The bulky, childish, and nonsensical monstrosities that they were... However, my more educated and art loving Wife and Daughter we're not shy about telling me to shut it. All that being said I would say that it is a great place for a walk and view!
Hidden Gem...what a great Museum!! We weren't sure to stop here or not during our day trip to Hakone. Glad we did. What a beautiful open air museum. We only stayed here about 2 hrs but it deserves and entire afternoon strolling through the gardens and enjoying the great art. Very surprised to find such a great collection of modern art hidden in this small town up in the mountains. Must stop here if you are in the area and are an art lover. Very kids friendly...This museum is kind of similar to the Rodin Museum in Paris that also is open air, I will say is even better
The museum is in a beautiful little valley in the middle of the mountains. I went in the Spring and it was very peaceful. I suggest taking your time and dedicating at least 3 hours to your visit, since the exhibit is big and kind of spread out. You can bring something to eat and take a break laying down on the grass. They also have a small stream were you can lay your feet in thermal waters. There are a couple of very nice restaurants, in case you don't feel like bringing a packet lunch.
Idyllic mountain outdoor sculpture garden that is expansive, impressive, and weaves the natural beauty of the mountain setting into the the display of the sculpture. It's perfect for a family getaway! Only an hour's drive from Kamakura. It was much cooler than the hot summer heat of Tokyo and Yokohama. The picasso exhibit was great, and the outdoor sculpture was some of the best I've seen. I highly recommend this beautiful treasure in the mountains. They have features that are specifically for young children as well. We started for 5 hours and still didn't see everything!
Far but totally worth the trip. One of the best museums I've ever been to. Love how they Use the outdoors. It's a bit expensive though-1600yen for adults not really worth it. You can spend maybe 3 hours here. Best to come when it's cool... came during the summer and the heat killed me !
