Japan's first outdoor art museum against the backdrop of the picturesque Hakone mountains, is indeed a treat for your eyes. Spread over 70,000 square metres of lushness, this museum believes in promotion of sculpture as an environmental art. There are 120 permanent art installations from modern and contemporary sculptors and artists from all over the world, that are displayed here. The sculptures are not guarded by any fence, thus giving the visitors an opportunity to get a feel of the artist's message from close. There are also five indoor exhibitions, one of which is the popular Picasso's Pavillion, displaying 300 of the maestro's work. Nature provides a unique background to these pieces of art, as different seasons provide different framework for the sculptures.

Hakone Open Air Museum Reviews & Ratings
Easily one of the best art museums in Japan! The location is obviously a big reason why it’s so impactful. The mountain scenery provides a beautiful backdrop to the sculptures, and it also changes how you might view those pieces (as opposed to a typical gallery setting). The museum is designed and curated well. Everything feels open and stylish. Don’t forget to use their free foot bath!
Our group of four really enjoyed the Hakone Open Air Museum. The outdoor sculptures are impressive and it is a joy to wander in the peaceful park. The foot bath is pretty nice too. The Picasso collection is not that impressive, but we were visiting when the Picasso Pavilion was under renovation (until summer 2019). Thus, there were less of his works available for viewing. The museum shop was particularly great.
Amazing museum with very nice views of the Hakone mountains. Great for families. Spend at least 2 to 3 hours to fully appreciate the sculptures and the garden. It’s very peaceful & relaxing. Highly recommended.
A must visit place if coming to Hakone. World famous foreign and Japanese artists desplay great works outdoors. Museum also has 2 nice artistic playgrounds for kids. Highly recommended!
One of the most unique museums I have gone to. It’s a mixture of art and natural scenery which was such a peaceful and serene way to spend an afternoon in Hakone. Would love to go back during fall colors.
