Japan's first outdoor art museum against the backdrop of the picturesque Hakone mountains, is indeed a treat for your eyes. Spread over 70,000 square metres of lushness, this museum believes in promotion of sculpture as an environmental art. There are 120 permanent art installations from modern and contemporary sculptors and artists from all over the world, that are displayed here. The sculptures are not guarded by any fence, thus giving the visitors an opportunity to get a feel of the artist's message from close. There are also five indoor exhibitions, one of which is the popular Picasso's Pavillion, displaying 300 of the maestro's work. Nature provides a unique background to these pieces of art, as different seasons provide different framework for the sculptures.

  • What a wonderful experience to walk through the grounds of the open air museum on a perfect winters day. There is something for everyone, from the youngest to the oldest. Children are catered for by having access to two dedicated play areas which are unique. You may not have a positive feeling about every exhibit you observe but overall there is something for everyone. Make sure you go to the too of the tower with the beautiful stained glass interior. Dip your feet in the steaming foot pool and of course there is the Picasso exhibition which is exquisite. There are plenty of places to eat and relax and gift shops aplenty. The museum was my Hakone highlight.

  • Amazing place! Beautiful grounds with art placed throughout. Definitely kid-friendly with multiple pieces of art they can interact with. Takes about two hours to see everything, 90 minutes if you’re going quick. Although you could spend a half-day here if you were so inclined. Highly recommend for anyone going to Hakone area!

  • This museum was one of the most beautiful art museums I have ever seen! Not only does it have an entire museum full of Picasso art, but it also has so many interactive pieces designed for kids. I only wish I was young enough to play on them! There were also many other beautiful large and small pieces around the grounds. If you are in the area, it is a MUST see.

  • Art for miles!! Such a fun way to spend a sunny day. Beautifully groomed gardens and paths lead to one sculpture after another. One of the largest sculpture gardens (in terms of quantity of works of art) I’ve ever seen. Two play areas for children and tons to see.

  • An amazingly large and extensive collection!! With all sorts of intriguing art big and small. We were not expecting such a great and massive museum, exceeded all expectations and we ended up spending most of our day here. They seasonally do a night light up too that would likely be awesome!
