About Hakone Open Air Museum, Hakone

Japan's first outdoor art museum against the backdrop of the picturesque Hakone mountains, is indeed a treat for your eyes. Spread over 70,000 square metres of lushness, this museum believes in promotion of sculpture as an environmental art. There are 120 permanent art installations from modern and contemporary sculptors and artists from all over the world, that are displayed here. The sculptures are not guarded by any fence, thus giving the visitors an opportunity to get a feel of the artist's message from close. There are also five indoor exhibitions, one of which is the popular Picasso's Pavillion, displaying 300 of the maestro's work. Nature provides a unique background to these pieces of art, as different seasons provide different framework for the sculptures.

Hakone Open Air Museum, Hakone Reviews

  • Huge collection of interesting sculptures some of them quite Interactive blown by the wind or maybe made more interesting by your kids climbing in them on them through them rearranging them Etc. You can also have a free foot bath, 100 yen for a tiny towel. But you could bring your own if you want. And free lockers out front. 100 yen coin is needed but you get it back.

  • I was surprised as to how much cool stuff is densely packed into this large area. So many cool things you'll be bound to find an area of interest. Plus, a little open air bath for your feet once you're tired of walking, which was really good on such a cold day.

  • A unique and beautiful experience in a lush mountain area. I was expecting very little but loved my time here. What a pleasant surprise!

  • Exceeded my expectations as a location to take my children. We were travelling with friends and the age range of our kids was 1-5years old. They all loved the museum. The interactive displays were clever and creative as well as engaging. We would come back. We had lunch at the buffet and spent all day here. FYI The cafe only sells drinks.

  • Beautiful, Innovative and Memorable. There's nothing better than being able to view art and sculptures in what seems like a natural environment. There was so much to see and experience while visiting the museum. It was unique and had a tremendous amount to offer. Even the playground or installations for children were unique and innovative. The Hakone Open-Air Museum was something I am very glad I didn't miss while in Hakone.
