Alter Elbtunnel - Review

Set up in 1907-11, the eldest of the Elbe Tunnels joins the area of St Pauli with the island of Steinwerder. The twin tunnel is 426m long and runs only 6m beneath the stream. Manufactured for activity, cyclists and walkers, the tunnel is beautified with adornments and tiles and can just be arrived at by lift or down the staircase. The intriguing vault molded door lobby on the north side was assembled by Ludwig Raabe and Otto Wöhlecke. Because of expanding measures of activity, even the New Elbe Tunnel has barely been amplified to an additional path. As more than 40,000 specialists needed to cross the Elbe to work at the shipyards and harbour administrators on the south bank at the start of the most recent century, a tunnel was fabricated between 1907 and 1911. The tunnel, made up of two single-path pipes of over 400 m (1300 ft) interfacing St Pauli with Steinwerder, was a sensation in now is the right time and was the first tunnel under a stream on the European terrain. Despite the fact that it was at first intensely utilized for transport, it is currently basically a vacation destination. Also, visit the popular attractions in the city by following Hamburg itinerary 3 days.

Alter Elbtunnel, Hamburg Reviews

  • Very interesting.. worth seeing as It takes only about 1 hour. But you can also stop in the other side, there's a very nice panoramic place with also a bar, or you can bring yourself a beer and enjoy

  • Interesting and cool 1 km tunnel connecting St Pauli and the port lands. Under reconstruction and beware of the flying cyclists, but an interesting place to visit. Take the elevator or walk the steps down and up. Great views of Hamburg from the port side.

  • Amazing place to visit especially for the Port festival! Lots of food, drinking, boats and fun! You can quite easily spend an hour here or even the full day. You can go on plenty of boats moored up or boat tours too. They even had a Disney boat. Most boats we saw had admission fees (even the ones moored up).

  • A really nice area with souvenir shops. The hard rock cafe is located there too. The tunnel is fantastic if you consider when they build it. It is not clear where exactly is located but you can find some small signs which can direct you. There are stairs and lifts at both sites of the tunnel, but if someone is afraid of highs i strongly suggest to take the one of the lifts. It will be a bit scary to try the stairs. The tunnel is not so long, maybe 5 to 10 minutes walking and you are on the other side of the river where you can find a view site of the city and a small description of the tunnel. In general you cannot find anything else on the other site.

  • This is a very nice place. A century old tunnel that’s over 400 meters long. Great piece of architecture!
