The name literally means City of Warehouses. This neighborhood is the largets timber pile founded warehouse district in the world, whatever that means. Built in 1883 as a a custom free port, the area has undergone reconstruction numerous times including now. The museums here are nice and include Deutsches Zollmuseum (German Customs Museum), Miniatur Wunderland, a model railway, the Hamburg Dungeon, and the Afghan Museum. And yes, they do still use the warehouses. If you feel like relaxing, sit down close to the harbor and see the big boats sail on by.
