Hey, an artificial lake in the middle of the city! That’s always fun. It took the city three years to build it and it made the public very happy by creating jobs in a time of Depression (yes, this was the early 1930s). Now, the place is one of the city’s favourite retreats. A festival called Maschseefest (literally Swampfest) is held in the summer for a couple of weeks with much cabaret, cuisine and cannonplay (fireworks actually, but close enough). Boat clubs operate rowing and sailing fun in the summer; there’s a pretty little artificial beach at the south end; a 6 km long jogging track, cycle track circles the area, (skaters use it too); and when the city says its safe in winter, the people take to the ice for some serious hockey and skating. Also, no such place would be complete without some strange looking modern art so the Lion Bastion, the Hellebardier, Putto on the Fish and the Swimmer are posted around the park to creep you out. Seriously, they look creepy.
