Binh Minh Jazz, Hanoi Reviews
On my last night in Hanoi, I finally made it to the legendary Binh Minh Jazz Club. The owner, after whom the venue is named, sits in a corner, chain-smoking cigars under a fluorescent sign of himself playing the saxophone. The house band belts out jazz standards and improvises solos, with a distinctly Vietnamese take on the vocals. If you're lucky - as we were - Minh will occasionally get up to perform. His delicate, breathy rendition of 'Misty' will live long in the memory. Only negative is the drink prices, which are steep for Hanoi but still cheap by Aussie standards. Be careful of the happy hour v regular price differences on the menu! Entry is free but you are kind of expected to buy a drink while you're there. Personally, I'm happy to pay a bit extra to support this fantastic venue!
I just loved this place. Great quartet improvising wonderfully over standards, which you just don't see in Australia. The sax player is like the Vietnamese Art Pepper, couldn't get my head around how good he is! Rest of the band were great too. I loved watching their improvisation and the way they joked around with each other and the crowd. The boss man played a fee tunes and an American guy got up and played some sick blues harp. People complain about the drink prices but seriously get a life, unless you're a backpacker you can afford it. Amazing night all round will definitely go back!
Found this gem via a Lonely Planet article. Coming from NYC and loving live jazz music - I was incredibly impressed by this place. The seating was intimate and comfortable. We arrived there around 9:20 pm and found a decent place to sit. The band + singer was super talented. Smoking allowed inside but I thought it added to the atmosphere (if you don’t like cigar / cigarette smoke you might be uncomfortable). I had a glass of red wine (western price but with it), and my friend had a beer (prices inflate after 9 when the music starts). The owner is a well-known local saxophonist. I felt honored to see such talent for free.
Great music good vibe, highly recommend it, drinks on the expensive side but no cover charge.
This jazz club is a great spot for an after dinner cocktail or three :) The bar was intimate and smoky everything you want from a true jazz club. The music and band were amazing creating the feeling of being back in jazz’s heyday. Highly recommend to any music lover. The drinks do get very expensive after 9pm so if you are on a budget they have happy hour from 8-9pm where drinks are significantly cheaper. Regardless you’ll have a great time here.
