Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, Hanoi Reviews
This is going to be a bit of a mixed review. You can purchase your ticket at the box office several days in advance if you wish, then just show up before showtime and go in. There are ushers stationed inside to show you to your assigned seating (the seat row and number is written on your ticket) I'll start with the good part of my review first. I enjoy different cultural experiences and as for the water show itself I really enjoyed it. I had never seen anything quite like it. There was live music being performed on either side of the stage. While I quite know what was going on (I'm assuming the show was playing out some kind of folk story) I enjoyed it none the less. Now on to the part I didn't care for. While I can appreciate the charm of an older structure the seating in the auditorium leaves a lot to be desired. I was only able to view about 60% of the stage area, the rest was blocked by peoples heads. Unfortunately for me a rather rotund gentleman with a head resembling a good sized pumpkin blocked a good portion of my view. So I can not fully recommend this show, the show itself is enjoyable but there is no way of knowing who will be seating in front of you and it's quite possible that you will only be able to see a portion of the show.
This is a great way to experience this unique piece of cultural heritage! This entertaining show goes through many many parts of traditional Vietnamese life portrayed through the water puppets. This is accompanied by traditional live music. The show lasts for about an hour which is enough to get a good immersion and it's varied enough to stay interesting throughout. I would recommend this as a place to go in Hanoi
It was pleasant even if I can't understand Vietnamese. It was not hot in there but cool. The seats were comfortable. The cost was good to just come indoors out of the hot of Ha Noi for the length of the show. You can't go wrong.
I was not sure about going to that place first. I was a bit wondering if it was only a tourist trap. The building look quite old from outside that might be why I was thinking that. It's actually really interesting. It's like puppet but in 3D. It's not childish and everyone will have a laugh for sure. It's only 100 000 dong per adult (4$) so it totally worth the money. By the way I advise you to go directly at the counter to book. The timetable online was not really up to date in my case.
A really fantastic experience. The way they control the puppets in water is amazing, and the live music/folk songs whilst the puppets are performing makes it a great atmosphere. We were lucky enough to sit at the front, however it may be a bit harder to see the further back you are. Book as close to the front as possible (front three rows best). The only negative thing was the other tourists there. Some let their kids run loose and bang on the chairs, and another was loudly speaking on his phone. I would recommend the latest showing in the evening to minimize the chance of having noisy children there.
