The Itsukushima Shrine or the Takejima Shrine is a Shinto shrine on the Onoseto Strait. The distinct feature of the shrine is that its Torii or Gate seems to be floating on the waters during high tide. Dedicated to the Shinto Deity of Sea and Storm and her three daughters, the shrine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With the idea of it being too sacred to tread upon by the common people, the Itsukushima shrine was set up on piers. The shrine dates back to circa 593 while the present structure is said to be rebuilt in 16th century. The arched Sori-bashi inside the shrine is notable and is a nationally and culturally important property. The smaller Marodo Shrine dedicated to five deities is also venerable.
