About Unicoi State Park & Lodge, Helen

Unicoi State Park & Lodge is a 1,050-acre (4.25 km2) state park located immediately north-northeast of Helen, Georgia in the northeastern portion of the state. The centerpiece of the park is 53-acre (21 ha) Unicoi Lake on Smith Creek. The park is especially popular in October, when the autumn leaves in the forest change colors. Entry to the park is from Georgia 356, just off of Georgia State Route 75 (North Main Street in Helen). Georgia 75 Alt allows visitors coming from the south via Cleveland, Georgia to bypass the massive traffic jams on 75 through the town during weekends, holidays, and Oktoberfest. The park also allows access to Anna Ruby Falls, owned by the U.S. Forest Service and run by the non-profit Cradle of Forestry. Separate parking fees must be paid for the park and the falls. In August 2005, some damage occurred to the park when a tornado spawned by Hurricane Katrina touched down in part of the town of Helen, and then traveled north through the park. According to signs posted, some relatively minor damage occurred to the lodge, and 15 acres (six hectares) of trees were downed. The trees were logged for timber, and small controlled burns were used to eliminate excessive dead vegetation, while the branches from the timber were turned into mulch used in the park.

Unicoi State Park & Lodge, Helen Reviews - Write a Review

  • This park is NOT for serious hikers and outdoors people. It is, by design, meant for busy families which wish to have an 'outdoor experience' prepared for them at a price. The nearby town and Lodge will be *very* good to such people. The trails towards Helen lacked any really interesting vista or features worth noting. The trail was bizarrely enhanced with more than a few rocks. It came off as being a half measure. The tennis court by the trail had huge piles of sand and boats stocked within. It came off as unsightly and unkempt. Give me wilderness or a resort, but not this.

  • Don't buy the firewood here, we couldn't get it to stay lit. The manager refunded my money without a problem. Nice sized walk up tent campsites, restrooms were clean but shower stall needlessly small. Nice trail around the lake. So convenient to Anna Ruby falls and Helen. Could do better with signage, but this is the case at most GA state parks.

  • I have stayed at the lodge before and loved the accomodations. They also have newer looking cabins that look really cool. This time we just went to hike, and the trails were beautiful, especially since it snowed.

  • Go early!!! We chose to go mid morning not knowing what the crowds would be trying to visit the Anna Ruby Falls. Wow I'm glad we chose to go early by the time we left the line to get in rapped around the road a good ways. The waterfall was beautiful and the paved path to get to it wasn't bad at all. It's pretty much all up hill, once you reach the falls there is a 5 mile trail of the left as your looking at the falls. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a moderate hike. The trail was well maintained but be aware you are in good ole mother nature. We came across a yellow jacket nest that had been disturbed by hikers coming from the other directions and well anyone from that moment on who came across that location was stung free of charge haha. All in all it was a fantastic hike and the falls were truly amazing.

  • Stayed at the Squirrels Nest (in a terrible storm) and still had a blast. Stayed dry too! Staff were welcoming and helpful. Lake Unicoi is gorgeous. Same for nearby Anna Ruby Falls.
