Suomenlinna - Review

Suomenlinna is on a lovely set of islands just off the coast of Helsinki. These islands are accessible by ferry and a refreshing getaway from the city. The Sea Fortress which was initially known as Sveaborg spans over the islands and a brilliant system of fortification made these islands an excellent strategic location in the olden days.

Today they are a charming change of scenery for the locals and a real attraction for the tourist. The King’s gate and the Main Pier are certainly worth noting while the fortifications and tunnels all around the island are intriguing and well built. There is also a dry dock for the ships which is worth a look.

While the manmade side of Suomenlinna is certainly spectacular a lot is to be said about the natural vegetation of the islands as well. The place changes it colors with the seasons and the biodiversity is impressive. Migratory birds find this area to be an attractive spot especially in summer. There are several meadows ponds and shores which are a refreshing break for tourists. Be sure to explore the island thoroughly during your visit. Also, visit the popular attractions in the city by following Helsinki itinerary 2 days.

Suomenlinna, Helsinki Reviews

  • It is just beyond beautiful! Part old town, part fortress and part private living space this little island has it all. Even a submarine!! We got there on a small ferry (the city runs it every 20 minutes and is super cheap and convenient). Walked and took in the beautiful surroundings (we had a stroller and some parts were very difficult to navigate) but we managed. Once you walk over the bridge you can see the fortress and walk in and around it to explore. There's also a submarine that you can explore and has tickets to get it. There's no entrance fee to the fortress itself. We spent a good couple hours there!

  • Amazing getaway if you are in Helsinki. Specially on a nice, sunny summer day. You can easily spend a day exploring the museums and tunnels and then still go to the beach for a dip. Evenings can be rather cold and windy, especially atop the cliff, so be prepared.

  • Spent 1.5 hours here and that was enough for me. Unless you hire a guide, walking around the island proves to be a bit boring. Yeah yeah yeah history and all which is cool, but there were limited placards outlining the significance of what I was looking at. Super easy and to get there & back right from the markets area. I think it was $6 Euro or something like that.

  • Great place to visit from Helsinki. A must see. Only 15 min ferry ride on public ferry and lots to see there. We did guided walk in English which was excellent. You could easily spend half a day or more on the island(s). Do go!

  • Great one day trip. Access this beautiful group of interconnected islands couldn't be easier, boats depart every 15 minutes. Nice woods, (very cold water) beaches and diverse wildlife. The fortress is spectacular, many tunnels, passages and old, abandoned military facilities, artillery... Even a theatre. The old Town is quite charming: Church, several old cafes and restaurants.
