Suomenlinna is on a lovely set of islands just off the coast of Helsinki. These islands are accessible by ferry and a refreshing getaway from the city. The Sea Fortress which was initially known as Sveaborg spans over the islands and a brilliant system of fortification made these islands an excellent strategic location in the olden days.

Today they are a charming change of scenery for the locals and a real attraction for the tourist. The King’s gate and the Main Pier are certainly worth noting while the fortifications and tunnels all around the island are intriguing and well built. There is also a dry dock for the ships which is worth a look.

While the manmade side of Suomenlinna is certainly spectacular a lot is to be said about the natural vegetation of the islands as well. The place changes it colors with the seasons and the biodiversity is impressive. Migratory birds find this area to be an attractive spot especially in summer. There are several meadows ponds and shores which are a refreshing break for tourists. Be sure to explore the island thoroughly during your visit. Also, visit the popular attractions in the city by following Helsinki itinerary 2 days.

  • We think this is a must visit place in Helsinki. We took public ferry transport to reach the island, which is included in public transport ticket. The island is pretty and huge. Prepare 3-6 hours to explore the island. The island also has some cafes, tourist info center, museums, and fortress. It's a good place to walk around with families.

  • Excellent half day trip in Helsinki. Beautiful, well maintained little island with tons of history. The military museums were fascinating. The brewery was great too!

  • A beautiful island few minutes ferry distance from Helsinki. It's my favourite place to go during summers with my friends and family to just unwind, relax and enjoy the calm beauty of the place. You can just walk around the whole island fortress, I would suggest carrying your own food or drinks if you want to.

  • If you are searching for a perfect place for picnic don't follow the trail for tourists but turn right from where you arrive toward the old barracks and past some inhabited buildings to lovely seaside area.

  • There's many things to see and do, check for upcoming events and ferries, and you'll definitely enjoy from a great day!
