Suomenlinna is on a lovely set of islands just off the coast of Helsinki. These islands are accessible by ferry and a refreshing getaway from the city. The Sea Fortress which was initially known as Sveaborg spans over the islands and a brilliant system of fortification made these islands an excellent strategic location in the olden days.
Today they are a charming change of scenery for the locals and a real attraction for the tourist. The King’s gate and the Main Pier are certainly worth noting while the fortifications and tunnels all around the island are intriguing and well built. There is also a dry dock for the ships which is worth a look.
While the manmade side of Suomenlinna is certainly spectacular a lot is to be said about the natural vegetation of the islands as well. The place changes it colors with the seasons and the biodiversity is impressive. Migratory birds find this area to be anattractive spot especially in summer. There are several meadows ponds and shores which are a refreshing break for tourists. Be sure to explore the island thoroughly during your visit.
- Wear walking shoes as you will have to walk around the island a lot.
- Remember that it is a car free zone and there are no bikes on hire so walking is the only way to explore the island.

Suomenlinna, Helsinki Reviews - Write a Review
Beautiful small island , 10 min ferry ⛴ Ride from Helsinki. Can also visit a small museum, marvelous views with stunning landscapes.
Awesome place! It's worth to visit it more than once...if you have the time. ^^ Definitely a great place to picnic with friends in summer or just walking around. Each time you can find new nice places where you haven't been or seen before... It's also perfect for taking photos or drawing. I like to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea in one of the small café's on the island...
Interesting place, full of history and breath taking landscapes. Easy to arrive from the market square, if you have the one-day transport ticket, you can use it to take the ferry. Nice restaurants in the island (a bit expensive but worth it).
Public ferry for the short trip to the island. Good signage describing the history of the place, nice visitor's center and gift shop. Very comfortable walking around on your own to see the entire area.
Fun fortress to visit if you enjoy thinking about the past and construction of fortresses. There are many spots for you to explore in the grassy expanses, hidden beaches and old reinforcements inside the grassy hills.
