Hemis Festival : This festival take place in the last week of June, i.e. from 26th June to 27th June, at the courtyard of Hemis Gompa, the biggest Buddhist monastery of Ladakh. In this festival, the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava is celebrated. People dressed in colorful garb perform on the courtyard. Lamas referred as ‘Chhams’ perform impressive mask dance and perform sacred plays on this occasion. The plays are accompanied by the music of cymbals, drums and long horns. The head lama presides over the function. The festival takes place with the auspicious day of every 12 years of Tibetan calendar of the Monkey, where the two storeys tall ‘Thanka’ portraying Padmasambhava is kept on display. Beside this religious ritual, colorful handicrafts are put on display.
