Though there are many caves in the city, this is perhaps the most renowned one. It is also the largest in the region located high on the northwest of Village Skotino. Skotino caves are also referred as Agia Paraskevi caves by the locals who has dedicated it to Saint Paraskevi, a great man of that time. It was first unearthed by Arthur Evans in 1933 and later further excavated sby many other who have found metal and ceramic offerings dating back to Minoan period. The study suggests that the cave was a sacred place for them and was dedicated to a female fertility deity. While the place may have an abandoned feel with less number of tourists and no guard around, it is great for explorers and curious souls who are interested in history and its various aspects. Come to check out the range of items including needles, pots and more and spend an hour or two reliving the past!
