Motonago, Higashiyama Ward Reviews
How to describe this other-worldly experience? Let's start with the bed. Instead of the traditional tatami mattress on the floor, they had it elevated off the ground on these gorgeous wooden slats. I normally cannot sleep well on the regular tatami mattress but this structure in combination with their thicker and denser tatami mattress made it one of the best sleep I'd had, even more than the plush spring beds you find at most upscale western hotels. Breakfast in rooms was just perfect as was the public bath. You'll need to sign for your spot in the one public bath but I think this is a minor concession for 30minutes of pure bliss. Communication can be improved, but I suppose the slow-mail correspondence adds to the charm. Cleanliness impeccable. I stayed at another hotel after this and was surprised to find this level of cleanliness was not the status quo in Japan.
We loved staying here! The food was amazing, the room was newly refurbished and beautiful, service was flawless. Would stay again.
This resort can be described as a "Ryokan", a traditional Japanese resort. This kind of hotel is very formal and will offer a very different kind of experience that you may not experience outside of Japan. You can expect a high level of professionalism, traditional food only in Kyoto and a unique cultural experience.
Not a great first time ryokan experience, I would not recommend coming here since the service is rushed and the facilities are very old. The nightime caretaker was a very nice old man who was very helpful, but the room assigned to me had a strange smell and looked tired. The noise from the tourists seeped into the room, but luckily by 10pm most tourists were gone from the area. Be aware you are right smacked in the most popular tourist area in the vicinity. The greeting lady host made the experience feel rushed, she needs to slow down when speaking to non-Japaneee guests. The morning breakfast for 1650 yen was disappointing, not delivered on time and expensive (and I was glad I had dinner the night before somewhere else), the salmon was hard and not tender, you can get a better Japanese breakfast at Kyoto station for half the price. The shared baths were also very old, cramped and tired. Place needs a serious refurbishment, this is simply not an excuse for a ryokan experience.
Excellent service, great location to get the feel of old world Japan. Food was excellent. We had traditional breakfast and dinner. We had larger room with garden view because family of four. Kyoto was very busy, but early morning or late evening when crowds are gone was a magical experience. Don't miss the temple close to ryokan with the lighted zen garden and bamboo trees. Absolutely beautiful experience.
