  • Charming ryokan in Gion, geisha territory. Excellent service. Communicative staff. Clean rooms. Delicious breakfast served to your room. The perfect experience. The only concern I had was the dog in front and roaming cats, which I could occasionally hear during the night, but this was a small concern considering how lovely my stay was. Thank you, Tamahan.

  • This is an unforgettable retreat in the middle of Kyoto. The traditional ryokan features gorgeous Japanese gardens, lovely architecture, and incredible hospitality. The owners have one adorable shiba inu and several cats, but will not pose a challenge to those with allergies or dislike of animals. The ryokan dinner and breakfast is likely to be one of the best meals one will ever enjoy. Similarly, the traditional wooden bathtub will relax you and be reminiscent of old Japan. The incredible attentiveness and care the staff put into caring for the ryokan's guests is unlike anywhere else.

  • Very greet host, felt so welcoming. Breakfast was great.

  • Quick Facts - authentic Japanese ryokan experience - excellent food - excellent service - clean I debated over a 4 or 5 star rating for this hotel and eventually settled on 4 for two reasons: I stayed on a lower floor room and could hear the people above me quite and the room I stayed in is beginning to look at bit "tired". HOWEVER, if you are seeking a true Japanese Ryokan experience then Tamahan Ryokan is an excellent choice. The inn keepers are kind and attentive and speak just enough English to get you by. The hotel is located in an interesting part of Kyoto with many older buildings and streets to explore and is close enough to transit to get you pretty much anywhere you need to go. The food (we paid for breakfast and dinner service) has been excellent: delicious, fresh, beautifully prepared and presented. For Western travellers this is an unusual type of lodging and I would only caution that if you need your room for business purposes or are recovering from a long journey (i.e. jet lag) you may wish to opt for your usual hotel instead and save this lodging for when you can really enjoy the unique experience it is. I am travelling for work and found that, after several hours of sitting on the floor and trying to work, my non-bendy body needed to move! :) All in all, however, a wonderful experience and I would highly recommend a Ryokan and certainly Tamahan Ryokan to anyone who wishes to take their experience of authentic Japan a step further.

  • Amazing Ryokan, well worth it!! Staff are incredibly friendly and so so helpful! Truly a traditional experience, recommend highly!
