Hikkaduwa experiences typical tropical climate and faces humidity all year round. Sri Lanka mainly experiences three seasons and in general is very hot and sticky due to the humidity. The seasons you will experience in Hikkaduwa are:
Monsoon Season: The monsoon season comes twice and lasts from May-July and then October-January. The southern part of Sri Lanka is affected in the months of May, June and July by the ‘Yala Monsoons’. The ‘Maha Monsoons’ affect the northern part during the months of October, November, December and January. Obviously, this is not the best season to visit the coastal town.
Summer: Summer runs parallel with Monsoon in between and it gets really hot starting from March and subsides only in October.
Winter: The months between November to February still have bearable temperatures and cannot actually be attributed as winter months. The temperature ranges from 25 degree Celsius to 37-38 degree Celsius. It does not get extremely cold here, although the night breeze can be slightly chilling like most coastal town.
The best time to visit Hikkaduwa is from the period of November to March as the weather is not very hot and the waves are the most reliable during this time and makes a great time for surfing. It is also the peak tourist season.
