Richardson Beach Park - Review
The only black sand beach in all of Hilo, Richardson Beach Park is a great place to have some fun in the water. The natural seawalls create tide pools and keep the water calm, making it perfect for even children. Thus, it is best for family picnics. The most popular activity at the beach is snorkelling, especially during summers. There are many tropical fishes and corals that you can observe here. Other than that, you can also indulge in swimming, surfing and kayaking. And if luck is on your side, you may even experience a rare sighting of a green sea turtle.

Richardson Beach Park, Hilo Reviews
Always a relaxing time here, beautiful sunsets, one may even be lucky enough to see a cruise ship leaving port. Friendly people. Fresh coconut, pineapple and many other things. Walk and explore this lovely place. You may even see turtles if you look, but do not touch, just admire their beauty, as the lovely and sacred marine life they are. Enjoy
Beautiful natural beach for swimming and watching nature at its best! Came her elate one afternoon on the recommendation of a guide book. I was not disappointed. Yes the place is busy when the sun is hot but there is plenty of (free) parking although this can be competitive. There are lots of trees creating shade and grass to sit on back from the beach - which is black soft sand so you have plenty of options. The water is clear and surprisingly cold because freshwater ponds behind the beach drain their water into the right hand side of the bay. Best to wear sandals in the water as the rocks (lava) are sharp if you stand on them. Heaps of rock pools for children to play in and if you are lucky you will also see turtles sunning themselves on the rocks at low tide (I didn't see them because it was high tide). Definitely on my list of places you should visit if you are in Hilo with transport.
It's one of my favorite beaches. I love to come here to snorkel. I also really like that it is a wonderful mash-up of happy tourists and friendly locals
Beautiful spot for snorkeling and soaking up the sun on a black sand beach. Vibrant and healthy coral and reef structure with hundreds of tropical fish. Water is clear and typically can see 60 feet straight down. Turtles often sun themselves on the beach or in the tide pools. There is a lifeguard station here during daylight hours and places to grill. Enough trees on the beach for shade on hot days or to hook up your hammock.
Beautiful beach park. Very unique beach with black sand here. Close to Hilo. Just a short drive south. We took a tour here off the Norweigian cruise ship with a great local guide company. The Richardson family and how the park came to be was a nice story to go along with a beautiful site. We didn't snorkel here but it has a nice protected area for swimming so snorkeling shouldn't be a problem.
