The only black sand beach in all of Hilo, Richardson Beach Park is a great place to have some fun in the water. The natural seawalls create tide pools and keep the water calm, making it perfect for even children. Thus, it is best for family picnics. The most popular activity at the beach is snorkelling, especially during summers. There are many tropical fishes and corals that you can observe here. Other than that, you can also indulge in swimming, surfing and kayaking. And if luck is on your side, you may even experience a rare sighting of a green sea turtle.

  • A great black sand beach. Plenty of parking. Change rooms and showers. No other facilities so take food and plenty of water. No real currents within the breakwater, although in my opinion, make sure you have flippers if you are going out further, unless you are a strong swimmer. If you are lucky you may see a turtle. We didn't today, bit we are going back anyway.

  • Beautiful underwater fish. More than I expected on this side of island. Great for first time snorkelers. Be careful and watch your steps. Lots of lava rock and coral.

  • Beautiful area! The black sand is fun and we saw sea turtles swimming right next to us. We weren't swimming, just gazing out at the ocean. It was marvelous!

  • Most places on the east side of the big island make snorkeling difficult due to the harsh sea state and waves. This place was calm and beautiful and easily accessible. There is an abundance of fish and even sea turtles within 100 meters of the shore line. There are showers and bathrooms open to the public on site.

  • Love this place. Super quiet and chill. Lots of friendly locals to strike up conversations with or share a meal/snack with. Super shallow waters, might spot a turtle or 2. Lots of sea urchins too so tread carefully
