The only black sand beach in all of Hilo, Richardson Beach Park is a great place to have some fun in the water. The natural seawalls create tide pools and keep the water calm, making it perfect for even children. Thus, it is best for family picnics. The most popular activity at the beach is snorkelling, especially during summers. There are many tropical fishes and corals that you can observe here. Other than that, you can also indulge in swimming, surfing and kayaking. And if luck is on your side, you may even experience a rare sighting of a green sea turtle.

  • Wow! This was such a magical place. Black sand, lava rock, snorkel and see colorful fish right off the beach. There are shallow pools to safely snorkel even with young kids to see fish ...Wear water shoes! We climbed up the rock and there were 6 sea turtles sleeping in the pool. Let them be, and enjoy their presence.

  • Cool black beach park with good beach access. The Internet said this was a great place to learn how to snorkel. I disagree. There are some cool things to see, but I spent most of the time battling the waves rather than checking out what was there. I did see two turtles after I got out and the black sand is the best.

  • Always a relaxing time here, beautiful sunsets, one may even be lucky enough to see a cruise ship leaving port. Friendly people. Fresh coconut, pineapple and many other things. Walk and explore this lovely place. You may even see turtles if you look, but do not touch, just admire their beauty, as the lovely and sacred marine life they are. Enjoy

  • Very nice black Sandy Beach. Added bonus was the fact we could see green sea turtles resting on the rocks near the shoreline.

  • Nice beach. Lifeguards at this one. Walk out far on the rocks and turn right, that's where the big turtles are.
