The only black sand beach in all of Hilo, Richardson Beach Park is a great place to have some fun in the water. The natural seawalls create tide pools and keep the water calm, making it perfect for even children. Thus, it is best for family picnics. The most popular activity at the beach is snorkelling, especially during summers. There are many tropical fishes and corals that you can observe here. Other than that, you can also indulge in swimming, surfing and kayaking. And if luck is on your side, you may even experience a rare sighting of a green sea turtle.

Richardson Beach Park, Hilo Reviews - Write a Review

  • Great Park with beautiful rocky beach. Nice picnic area and great place for swimming. Often times sea turtles swim here. Overall, great place to relax with friends and families.

  • Great local beach for snorkeling with turtles moving in and out of narrow rock walled channel at far end!

  • Cool black sand beach. Wish we had had more time to explore! I would definitely go back!

  • We got to snorkel with sea turtles here! They were so cool but startled me a bit. I wasn't educated enough about these animals to know whether or not they get aggressive and bite so I was more cautious than some. They'll bump right into you in the waves and not even care though.

  • It's a bit of a hike but totally worth! I think it's about 4.5 miles roundtrip. One of the few places you will find white sand on this side of the island. There's usually turtles sun bathing on lava rocks. I've been many times and will be back many more.
