About Himeji City Zoo, Himeji

Located in the Hyogo Prefecture of the city, the zoo is settled at the base of Himeji castle and is one of the busiest place in the city. Yes, the place literally see hundreds of visitors everyday and is also considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is decked in old style, reminiscing of the architecture that were in fashion years ago. Established in 1951, the zoo is home to a range of animals that are taken care of here well. You can see pink flamingos, tigers, bears, chimpanzees and what not on your visit here. The authority has done their best to keep its exactly the way it started and hence, don’t expect it to be a natural habitat that we normally see nowadays. Regardless, for families, a visit to this zoo is must!

  • Do not go there ! Calling this place a zoo is a disgrace ! I have seen student apartments bigger than the cages of the animals. It's disgusting and very sad to see the animals like that. They all look so depressed. The animals have barely enough space to move, let alone play. The birds are all in small cages less than a few square metres, they have absolutely no space to fly. They try to show the most animal possible in a small area and they do so by making them live in terrible conditions. It's close to animal cruelty. I really regret going there. I felt bad for all these animals and ashamed of having paid to see them like that.

  • Disgusting! I bought a ticket (against my better judgement) because I had a few hours before my train. I thought there might be a load of indigenous Japanese birds, rodents, reptiles etc... Basically, it’s a showcase of exotic animals flown from all over the world and kept in horrendous enclosures. The worst for me was a polar bear, in a tiny little cage with no pool, nothing to climb, nothing to interact with. Just a tiny filthy cage next door to a couple of lions. Why would anyone bring a polar bear half way around the world to put it in a matchbox. It was really upsetting. The bear was clearly just lying around in prison wishing it was free and probably waiting to die. Himeji should shut this zoo!

  • A truely shocking place. The animals are kept in horrifyingly small cages, a polar bear pacing back and forth in a cage the size of my living room, bored and stressed showing all the signs of repetitive stress behaviour. The other animals not much better, and the rides are out of the 19th century. Why they allow this place next to Himeji castle????

  • Very small cages...It was my impression that Japanese people have not much feelings with the animals....cages to small. You could see it in the eyes of the animals how boring their lifes are.

  • Don't waste your time and money there ! This place is a nightmare for animals ! The polar bears don't have enough place to play. The sea lion cannot even swim because there is only 50cm of water. Just look at my pictures and you'll see...
