Saint Catherine's Church And Bell Tower - Review

Saint Catherine’s Church has the esteemed distinction of being the largest wooden church with a bell tower in France. It was built by sailors in the late 15th century to replace a damaged stone building. The most unusual aspect of its architecture is the roof, which resembles an upturned boat. That and the fact that it is made entirely of wood is testimony to its builders.

This church is dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria who is represented carrying a wheel and a sword. It is partly covered with chestnut shingles, locally called ‘essentes’. The bell tower is said to have been built away from the main structure to minimise damage due to lightning. The light streaming from the 19th century stained glass windows is truly a sight to behold.
