The Cenotaph is a traditional war memorial of WW1 and WW2 which was established in 1923, and now is the main tourist attraction in the city. It was inaugurated by the then Governor Sir Reginald Edward Stubbs. It was mainly built to immortalize the dead of two wars. Later to immortalize the dead of WW2, ‘The Glorious Dead’ was inscribed in the statue. Then in 1970, Chinese Characters (YÃÄ«nghun buxiu haoqi chang cun) were inscribed onto it to immortalize the dead during Japanese Invasion. This Cenotaph is built with stone and almost looks similar to the original one which is placed at Whitehall in London, UK.
