The Saint Augustine by-the-Sea has it origins in the year 1854 when Father Modestus Favens built the first chapel in Waikiki. In the late 19th century, the church was used for the first mass for American Soldiers who were commissioned near the Diamond Head.

The church was expanded and later moved to its current location under the care of Father Valentin.

Today, the church can easily be called the most beautiful church in the city. The minimalistic alter complements the modern design of the church while the stained glass that makes the entrance wall, is just as breath-taking.

  • St Augustine by the Sea is a wonderful Catholic community. Everyone is warm and welcoming, and the priests are genuine, spiritual, and full of Christ. I particularly was moved by the blessing in Hawaiian, and the traditional Hawaiian liturgical dance by some of local community.

  • Saint Augustine is air conditioned & very clean. Each service on the weekend has a different group signing during mass. Sometimes a hula halau performs after mass. Father Lane makes you feel at home with God.

  • Nice church when traveling. Locals are friendly and it's wheelchair accessible. Parking lot is tiny, but we managed ok.

  • Nice church on the Waikiki strip. Beautiful stain glass windows. Nice place to attend service.

  • Loved the Mass I attended while on vacation in Waikiki. It's the traditional liturgy, but with a beautiful, native Hawaiian component. Vivat, Jesus!
