St. Augustine By-the-sea - Review

The Saint Augustine by-the-Sea has it origins in the year 1854 when Father Modestus Favens built the first chapel in Waikiki. In the late 19th century, the church was used for the first mass for American Soldiers who were commissioned near the Diamond Head.

The church was expanded and later moved to its current location under the care of Father Valentin.

Today, the church can easily be called the most beautiful church in the city. The minimalistic alter complements the modern design of the church while the stained glass that makes the entrance wall, is just as breath-taking.

  • A very peaceful, warm place in the heart of bustling Waikiki. The mass beautifully blends elements of Catholicism and traditional Polynesian music to create a unique, delightful way to experience mass. It's very humbling to be able to experience another culture, and I can't wait to go back to worship.

  • A little gem of spiritual tranquility in Waikiki. Thank you for leaving the doors open so that I can come into your house. Left me with feeling of greater faith that came from my visit to Hawaii allowing me to feel the love from the land and the people. Peace love and happiness to all.

  • Beautiful catholic church by the beach! Luckily my hotel was near by so we decided to go to there for Sunday mass. Father was very friendly, approachable and seemed loved by everyone there. Gotta love their hymns because they’re all Hawaiian style - nice & relaxed! Noticed half local and half tourists if that makes any difference but we were all there to pray and thank the lord for the beautiful experience in Waikiki I really miss it 🙏

  • I am currently homeless on oahu and recently found out that they serve free lunch Monday through Friday at eleven o'clock. I have been stArving all morning waiting for eleven o'clock. I show up, and they serve food outside, but refused to serve me food because I don't have a shirt. Well I am homeless and the only shirt I own is dirty and smelly and is at my camp over an hours walk from the church. I cannot possibly get a shirt and come back for food. I am stArving and really was looking forward to this meal since last night. But they refused and were rude about it. Unbelievable. And in God's house. I am a clean shaven young man and I just showered. Nobody on the beach has a shirt on. It's unreal how hungry I am and all the food they are giving away but refused me and shamed me. This church needs a new staff because the current staff is shining a bad light on this church.

  • Beautiful, peaceful church on the east side of Wikiki. The stain glass is magnificent.
