One of the most important historic building in Houlton, Maine, Aroostook County Jail has a huge complex in the heart of the city. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Aroostook County Jail dates back to the year 1859. The jail is situated on Court Street in Houlton and is known as the first ever purpose-built court facility in the country. Some features of the building were added in the years 1895 and 1928 respectively. On observing the building, you will see a rectangular block made of bricks, a cupola with a clock, and a bell-shaped roof.

Aroostook County Jail Reviews & Ratings

  • An extremely poorly run facility. If you wish to make a visit, I will tell you about the process. (Since nobody else will) They even went through a process to have my previous post deleted. Thats okay. Ill write it again for your convenience. Contact them within 12-2 on Friday to book an appointment to meet with your loved one on Saturday. Hopefully you'll speak with a woman (if she decides to be at her desk within the 2 hours, she was not when I called at 12:01) Ill say that again. Nobody was there to answer my call during the only 2 hours you are allowed to call. Hopefully, you reach someone. She will tell you absolutely nothing about the process. You are to arrive 15 minutes early with a photo ID. (I found out afterwards from a friend) After she doesnt tell you to be 15 mins early, if you arrive ONE minute late for your visit (and i do mean ONE) you are, again, greeted by an empty desk. Youll wait for 8 minutes until a cop decides hes ready to come around. Youll tell him youre here for a visit. He'll then stare at his watch for a good 30 seconds to convey a message of his superiority. He'll then inform you that you are 9 minutes late. (Doesnt matter that you waited 8 minutes for the cop and his superiority to come around) and you WILL NOT be having your appointment to see your loved one today. It doesnt matter if you drove 3 hours to see your loved one. It doesnt matter that NOBODY informed you to be early. They do not care about you. They believe their inmates do not deserve visits and so they will make it as difficult as possible for you to visit your family in their time of need. Hopefully when you visit you will heed this post so you get to see your loved ones. I was not so fortunate.

  • Have not stayed yet personally, but from the outside it seems well fortified.
