This is a fortress that was mostly built during the 11th and 12th centuries except the later additions and modifications. The land on which it is built is significant as it was once the frontier dividing the Christian and Muslim lands. There were originally three towers named Homage Tower, Tower of the Queen and the Chapel of Virgin Mary. Out of these only 2 still survive.

The layout of the castle is unique, the reason being the rocky terrain on which it had to be built. The fort is actually a collection of single building covered up by a ‘curtain wall’ to make it look like one. The whole monument is in a typical Romanesque style and still maintains the dignity that it is known for. The beauty of this monument is the proof of the name given to it which says “The Kingdom of Heaven. The original structure was marked by thick walls and as many as 8 towers which later broke down with time and have been restored time and time again.

  • Castle is amazing...but my god, the chapel is superb. Grand domed ceiling with alabaster windows, and ancient too! Try and make it in the early evening in summer for the light and acrobatic displays from the swallows who nest in the ceiling. Very peaceful and impressive monument.

  • Perched high on a hill up a twisting road with fabulous views, this is definitely a castle to visit. Plenty of free parking, a shop, restaurant, WC and a five minute walk to the castle. Buy your tickets at the shop and then you're free to roam as you wish.

  • This is a "must see" if you are visiting the area. It is the best preserved example of a Romanic fortress and chapel you are likely to encounter and has a well-run visitors' centre with cafeteria and guided tours in a variety of languages. It is open throughout the year.

  • Castle of Loarre is a Romanesque Castle and Abbey located near the town of the same name, Huesca Province in the Aragon autonomous region of Spain. It is one of the oldest castles in Spain of middle age of XI century. The castle's location on a rocky outcrop and a collection of buildings bounded by curtain walls.Castle is well maintained and the views are superb especially from the tower and a romantic place too.

  • It's worth a visit only for the superb location offering a splendid view over the countryside. The castle itself is mighty and impressive.
