One of the must-see places in Huntsville is Burritt on the Mountain, an open-air museum located on Round Top Mountain. Round Top Mountain is an estate that belonged to local physician William Burritt, after whom the museum is named.  Burritt wanted the estate and his house to be used as a museum after his death. This museum features a number of 19th-century rural structures and buildings such as the Balch House, Chandler House, a dogtrot house, Meals House, and a barn. Two of these are listed on the National register of Historic Places.

Burritt On The Mountain Reviews & Ratings

  • Such a fun trip with my 4 year old. The backpack activities were very age appropriate and got him interested and kept his attention. The playground areas, barnyard animals, hike and life size Lincoln logs were his favorite. The museum is interesting for adults and the scenery is great. Prefect family day trip.

  • We visited Burritt on the Mountain for the first time a few weeks ago and my family and I had a great experience. All the staff was very helpful and friendly. The views were gorgeous and seeing the old buildings was great. Only downside is it's a little pricey.

  • A hidden treasure tucked away on the mountain. It might not be seen from the road, but when you arrive, the view is breathtaking! Our 3rd-6th graders went on a field trip here, and they enjoyed it immensely! The tour guides were very accommodating, and the children loved the activities they were involved in during their visit. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience for everyone involved! Don't miss seeing the enormous cross! You have to hike a mile to see it, but it's definitely worth it to view this beautiful structure! There is so much history to learn about here, and the tour guides were eager and willing to share it with visitors!

  • Really enjoyed this museum. Took the family and spent a few hours doing the self guided tour. A lot history and really liked the houses from 1800s. Did a small hike down the mountain trail to the road and saw tow deer. I would recommend a visit.

  • Went there for a friend's wedding! Absolutely beautiful view especially during the sunset time! Clean and very well laid out. Perfect areas for pictures!
