A Roman Catholic cathedral in the town of Hvar, St. Stephen’s cathedral is also known as Katedrala Svetog Stjepana. It is one of the most impressive buildings of Hvar and is built on the site of a 6th century Christian church and later a Benedictine convent of St. Mary.
The current structure dates back to 14th century with the pulpit, the stone polyptychs of St. Luke, the flagellation of chirst, gothic crucifix dating back to 15h century.
The triple-isled structure with a 17th century bell tower presents a harmonius synthesis of Renaissance, mannerstic and early baroque styles of architecture. The interior boasts a wooden choir area and few Renaissance paintings.
