Hotel Anna, Hvolsvöllur Reviews
Quaint hotel near lots of attractions with elaborate breakfast included. Service is friendly but slow, as just one person is on site acting as receptionist, bartender, bellman, server, etc. Threadbare & unraveling towels gave the room a shabby impression (this would be so easy to fix!) but the antique furniture, high ceilings & cozy dining room are very pleasant. Dinner was fantastic...we skipped the horse meat & had lobster soup, the fresh cod & beef filet. Room price seemed high, but perhaps not for the area, considering breakfast was included.
Great food! Had the lamb dish and husband had the steak. Both local and delicious. Steak was a bit tough he said though. Very spendy so a little overpriced in my opinion but the food was good and homemade bread as well. Cured whale appetizer was a nice surprise from the chef :)
The Country Hotel Anna is hidden away, under a volcanic cliff. in the midst of fields containing Icelandic horses and sheep. It is easily accessible from the ring road, and has rooms furnished with interesting antiques and mementos from their namesake's travels. There is a pleaseant lounge. It is a reasonable distance if you want to catch the ferry to the Westmann islands, or see a couple of waterfalls. The staff was engaging, but also discreet. The breakfast had a good assortment of things to eat, with scrambled eggs and bacon being available. Delicious coffee. There is a restaurant on site. There are some local hikes described in the information binders. With these, you definitely can interact with the friendly animals.
We were very excited to try a nice sit down Icelandic meal during our stopover. The food was ok but overpriced. This was expected based on everything else in Iceland but we left a little disappointed. Staff was very friendly and the atmosphere was pleasant. If you are staying in the hotel this is one of the only close options for meals in the area, but if you are passing through I would not say this is a "must stop."
Great food, but prefer to go for lunch as price double in the evening.
