Dating back to the 12th century, the Karmanghat Hanuman Temple holds its roots in a legend. The story goes that a Kakatiya king was hunting in the forest and when he took rest underneath the shade of a tree, he heard someone chanting ‘Lord Ram’. The voice seemed to be coming from an idol of Hanuman- the monkey god. The King returned to his palace and that night dreamt of Lord hanuman who asked the king to build a temple.

The Kaktiya kingdom successfully survived for 400 years after the construction of this Hanuman temple until Aurangazeb attacked the whole area. The temple however was inaccessible to Aurangzeb’s army and they could not even cross the compound wall. Aurangzeb climbed the compound wall with a crow bar and as he reached the top of the wall, there was an intense roar that made him retreat. The voice echoed that if the king wanted to break the temple, he had to have a strong heart- literally translating to ‘kar-man-ghat’.
