The place is just as unique as its name. It is actually a basaltic lava plain stretching on the Snake River plain in Idaho Falls. Hell’s Half Acre is located about 40 kilometres from the city and can be frequented by people, rather by the adventurous ones; as coming here is anything but easy. Hell’s Half is 2000-year-old lava flow full of cracks and jagged rocks providing it with its rugged texture. Ensure to keep everything planned as you will be navigating through lava ramps, boulder and what not. Hiking in late spring will reward you some of the most amazing views in your life. There will be blooming desert flowers, moss, bright lichens providing a nice contrast to the monochrome of the surrounding. The range of flowers you will find here will make you fall in love with this place- evening primrose, gray rabbitbrush, juniper trees, needle and thread grass, sagebrush and more. Bird watchers and shutterbugs must definitely give this place a visit!

Hells Half Acre Reviews & Ratings

  • This is a different type of trail. You climb over lava flows and crevices. I only did the 1 mile loop but the 6 mile one sounds cool as well. You need good shoes! Water is a must for the long hike but not the short one.. Some if the loop trail markers are hard to see but there if you look.

  • Nice place to take a hike. Watch closely for the markers, as it's easy to miss them. Bring some good shoes or hiking boots, as the trails can be rough. Super unique and rugged landscape. If you're lucky you might even see a little wildlife... I watched a little rat run around for a while and caught a brief glimpse of a coyote on the run!

  • Sweet hike through an old lava area. My only complaint is it is hard to navigate through so you kind of just end up wondering around, but whatever it was still super cool to see!

  • It's a long and hard Trek with awesome scenery. I would recommend leaving very early in the day and taking plenty of water.

  • Great place to take kids. Easy hike.
