The purpose of constructing this canal was to link the Eerie and Wabash Canals to the Ohio River. The whole project was supposed to be funded by the Mammoth Internal Improvement Act, Indiana but after the Panic of 1837 everything got haywire and the project had to be stopped due to financial shortages. The canal was later divided into the north and South sections and much later the Indianapolis Section was also added. Eighty additional miles were added between Anderson, Indiana and Martinsville.
This canal was at that time partly built but at present serves as one of the main examples of infrastructural developments of the beautiful city. Not only does this road serve as an important communication network but it is also a major tourist attraction due to the fact that you can get a mind blowing view of the river and the distant parts of the city as you stand on top of this canal road.
