About 19 km from Interlaken, on the North Bank of Lake Thun, in the massif of Niederhorrn, is the cave where the legendary St. Beatus is said to have lived as a hermit. And apparently fought a dragon. And that was apparently four centuries after his death. A sprightly old zombie he must have been. But his home, these limestone caves, are actually as awesome as he deserves. With gorges, great halls and waterfalls to impress the most experienced spelunker, only about 1 km of these caves are open to the public. The remaining 14 km remain closed or open only to scientific exploration.

Now, they’ve even built an interactive museum with its own audio-guide into the Saint Beatus Caves. The museum discusses the cave’s origins, evolution, animals and plants and legend. The museum is an excellent option for any visitor who’s not currently healthy enough to tour the actual caves.

There is also a splendid restaurant called the St. Beatus Panoramic Restaurant where visitors can head to grab some delicious Swiss cuisine after a hard day of touring. How to get to St. Beatus Caves should not be an issue as the cave is easily accessible by road.
