Culloden Battlefield, Inverness Reviews
Excellent centre with friendly informative staff. So much history and information given regarding the battle and all persons involved. Some sections are interactive and the film, showing a re-enactment of the battle, where you stand in the middle of and view from all sides, is very effective. Toilets are very clean, the gift shop is good, offering various Scottish gifts from books, jewellery to clothing. The cafeteria is clean, and offers a variety of foods. I didn't eat here although it was busy. Would thoroughly recommend.
We found the walk round the centre very interesting and the displays were very well done. Staff were lovely and hugely knowledgeable. We didn't use the restaurant so can't comment on that. The battlefield and graves had us pretty emotional really. I'm so glad we visited, well worth it.
We have been planning to visit this battlefield for many years. It was great to finally get to see and tour this famous site. It was very interesting to see the location where my ancestors were buried after this massive defeat for the Jacobites. The visitor center is very nice and informative. Plan to spend at least a couple hours here. There were presentations on the battle that provided additional insight and were very well done. It is obvious that more work is needed to protect and improve this historic site. Having a road run through the middle takes a lot away from the battlefield. This is a must see if you are in the Inverness area.
The location is moving and profound. The history of the demise of the clans and the shocking loss of Scottish culture is heartbreaking. The artifacts and displays are truly awe inspiring. There is a lovely gift shop and cafeteria that offers some great food at great prices.
I have been a few times over 30 years and it still amazes me what I learn here. I love to hear about how it wasn’t Scotland vs England but more about the politics of power and the reign of Kings. Very interesting. So many ifs and buts about it all. If only they didn’t attempt the night raid, if only they didn’t choose that spot, if only France had the men for the invasion and so on..but, it didn’t happen and the rest is history! Brave men fought there and the battlefield still gives you some of the feel for it. Worth a visit and worth spending time at the museum. They have changed the film and I don’t think it gives as much info as before but the layout of the site is much better. National Trust get in free.
