A classic city square, the Kirov Square is one of the main hangouts and event venues in Irkutsk. Boasting of a nice fountain where kids like to take a dip, and a park which is almost always bustling with activities, the square has had as many as 12 different names in the past! At different points in its history, the square was called Kremlevskaya, Spasskaya, Bogorodskaya, Tikhvinskaya and Gostinodvorskaya. The current name comes from S. Kirov who was a prominent early Bolshevik leader in the Soviet Union and who lived in Irkutsk illegally from 1908 to 1909. Head over to the square during Christmas and check it out in its full glory.
