Spread over an area of over 300 acres, IRWD San Joaquin Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary is built in the flood plain area of San Diego Creek, just before its Upper Newport Bay outlet. In the 1950s and 1960s, this area was used as a farmland and duck hunting ground. Extensive restoration until 2000 transformed this place into a bird haven and nature paradise comprising of hawks, hummingbirds, ducks, swallows, geese, pelicans, herons and egrets. You will find more than 16 km of well-marked hiking trails, replete with restrooms, benches and free parking. Don’t forget to bring your camera when you visit IRWD San Joaquin Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary.
