The Etz Ahayim Synagogue very commonly also known as the Ortaköy Synagogue, is situated in Ortaköy on the shore close to the right section of Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul. The name “Etz Ahayim” translates into ‘Life Tree’. Ortaköy is a typical Jewish settlement with deep historical references. This Synagogue was build in 1660 however it got destroyed by a devastating fire in 1941 with only the marble Aron Kodesh was left behind undamaged, it was subsequently rebuilt. The Synagogue is very well maintained and offers service to its community with full course. It is recommended to visit this place when you travel to Istanbul and gain knowledge on the Jewish heritage and culture.
We just passed by today. Wanted to visit but it was locked. Perhaps it opens its doors only in Saturdays.
