Located inside the Hippodrome, the obelisk of Tutmosis III in an ancient structure erected by the emperor Theodosius in 390 AD. However, it is believed to be much older than that. It was originally made for Thutmose III, who ruled Egypt from 1479 to 1425 BC. It is the oldest monument in Istanbul and rests on four bronze blocks on a Roman base used in its transportation and re-erection decorated with reliefs. The carvings on it depict the emperor, his children and other prominent personalities portrayed in the act of watching the races from the imperial box, with spectators, musicians, dancers and chariot races at the back.
