Located at a beautiful location at the waterside of Ortakoy pier square, the Buyuk Mecidiye Mosque looks awe inspiring. The mosque that you see today was ordered by the Ottoman sultan Abdulmecid and was subsequently built between 1854 and 1856. It was given its shape by an Armenian father and his son, Garabet Amira Balyan and Nigogayos Balyan who were also responsible for designing the nearby Dolmabahce Palace and the Dolmabahce Mosque. With its beautiful Neo- Baroque architecture and splendid carvings, this mosque does deserve to be on the itinerary of Istanbul.
