This ancient Agora which is an open space that was used for assemblies and markets in Greek Empire is one of the landmarks in Izmir. It was ruined in a destructive earthquake in 178 AD and was rebuilt by Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
The structure comprises of Corinthian Colonnades with vaulted chambers and beautiful arches give you a glimpse of what a Greek market would look like.
After the invasion by the Muslim rulers, a cemetery was constructed on the site and several old tombstones can be still seen.
