Imagine having the highest population of blue jeans in the world. No, not actual denims but frogs with tiny fire engine red bodies and deep blue legs living in harmony with other poison dart frogs and all sorts of butterflies and snakes under one roof. Neo Fauna is a wild life sanctuary dedicated to the exhibition and reproduction of endangered species.
The owl butterfly is one of the largest butterfly with their distinct owl eye patterns which helps these species in deterring predators such as birds in the wild, but in this conservation farm they are multiplied and set free. Vibrant but toxic dart frogs are looked after tenderly. There are more than 100 such species varying in colour and pattern. Colours shades vary among these frogs but they all have one thing in common, the powerful poison in its skin. All the beautiful colours on the butterfly or the frog or the snakes are warnings to potential predators that these animals are all poisonous.
For Luis Angel Fonseca, park owner and biologist this was a start of an effort to conserve and reproduce butterflies but turned into a butterfly garden, serpentarium, and full blown frog breeding programme.
Frogs breathe through their skin and are extremely sensitive to change in temperature and humidity. Butterflies need 3 different host plants to reproduce so the conservation ground is 10,000 square foot with paths winding around the houses where the frogs and butterflies are kept with native plants landscape running all around these houses.
There are also wounded and sick wild animals who find their home here to be tended to, healed and then released into the wild. So you get to see turtles and snakes as well. But what catches your eyes are the butterflies in their life cycle, larval and cocoon stage all nurtured with tender love and care.
