Located in Upper New York Bay, Liberty Island is a federally-owned island. Since 1801, the federal government has held Liberty Island, initially as a military facility and now as a national landmark. The Statue of Liberty, a huge sculpture by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi that was dedicated in 1886, is its most recognizable feature. The 26,000-square-foot Statue of Liberty Museum features historical and engaging displays for visitors to explore. Statues of the individuals who contributed to the development of the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Island grounds can be found in the sculpture garden on the island.
