Kaiping Diaolou and Villages are fortified multi-storied defensive structure that beautifully integrates Chinese architectural style with the Chinese decorative forms. These structures reflect the prominent role of emigrated Kaiping people in the development of countries in Australasia, North America and South Asia during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was built originally to safeguard the residents against forays and intrusions by bandits. Kaiping Diaolou and Villages today stands as a classic example of how the buildings in spite of the Western designs have been able to maintain a beautiful relationship with the surrounding landscape.
